1 Year App Anniversary

Yay, today is my 1 Year App Anniversary! :)

On April 11, 2013, I launch WeightDrop, my very first paid app and it all went up from there. Some of you might recall that I had a free app before for my task management tool ThunderTask, but I like to count my days as a true app developer from the day when I made money from iPhone apps for the first time.

From Zero to App Success

For me it seems like a lifetime ago, because I learned so many new things in the last 365 days. It is unbelievable. Today, I can live from my app income. One year ago, it was a completely different story. I decided to go all-in on iOS apps and make it work no matter what. It was scary and hard and sometimes very unrewarding, especially this one period of time when I worked very hard on a big new app that was supposed to be a huge success, but failed miserably.

One thing is certain for me: the mobile app business is one of best if not THE best business field you can work in right now. If you are not into mobile, you are missing out big time! If I could go back in time to 2008 when the app frenzy started and only had the opportunity to write one short sentence to my past self, it would be: “MAKE IPHONE APPS!!!”

Some Learnings

Here is an incomplete list of some learnings from my first year as an app developer:

  • Launch your first app as soon as possible (1-2 months max; you have to learn how things work)
  • Build quality products (if your app has a rating of < 4.5 stars, you are doing it wrong)
  • Build evergreen apps (no crappy reskins please)
  • Built iOS apps, Android sucks
  • Focus an niches
  • Learn how to do proper market research in the App Store (it’s how you find app ideas that work)
  • Track, analyse, experiment, repeat
  • Learn all about monetization & experiment
  • Learn ASO & app marketing (it makes a huge difference)
  • Read & learn about the app business & trends every day
  • Network & get to know other app developers

The fun continues!

I still have a lot to learn about apps. And there are new things to discovery every day. It’s fun! Here is to many more years of app development! :)

  1. You and me both. Funny thing is, I developed an app just as the first iPhone was released and it did really well. Then I sat back and did nothing for 3 years! I’d go back and pass a note that said: “Make more apps you idiot!”
